Historical background to Korcula
Stone knifes from Neolithic period prove that the life on the island of Korčula dates back to prehistoric times.
In the 6th century BC old Greeks came to Korčula and settled themselves in the area of Vela Luka and after that came the Greeks from the island of Vis (known as Issa in the old times) and settled around the area of Lumbarda.
In the 1st century Korčula shared the same faith as the rest of Dalmatia – it became a Roman colony and it was called Illyrica. During the 7th century Slavs (Croats) came to the cost of the Adriatic Sea and established their own state and Korčula was a part of it.
The Dodge of Venice, Peter Orsello II took over Dalmatian cities and islands during the year 1000 thus Korčula became the part of the Venetian Republic. However, rulers of Korčula kept changing and finally Končula became the part of Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1921 and after that the part of Socialist Federate Republic of Yugoslavia; at the beginning of 1992 Korčula became the part of Republic of Croatia.
